Student salon

What to expect at your first student salon appointment

Walk in knowing exactly how the visit runs, and you will get a better result.

Booking a service at a beauty school for the first time feels like a small unknown. You are not sure how it works, who will be cutting your hair, or whether you are allowed to say something if it is not going the way you hoped. So here is the whole visit, start to finish, with nothing smoothed over.

Before you come: one phone call

There is no online booking, no form and no app. You call (734) 277-7726 and speak to us. That is deliberate — availability on a clinic floor depends on which services students are currently working on, so a person can tell you what is possible this week and a webpage cannot.

Walk-ins are welcome — calling ahead is recommended to avoid a wait. Our hours are Mon – Fri · 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM · Saturday · 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM · Sunday · Closed, so evenings after work and Saturdays are both options.

Allow more time than usual

This is the single most useful piece of preparation. A student works carefully, and an instructor will pause the service at checkpoints. A cut that takes forty minutes in a commercial salon may take considerably longer here. Do not schedule anything tight afterwards, and the whole visit becomes pleasant rather than stressful.

Arriving

You will find us at 29210 Ford Rd, Suite B, in Garden City, just off Ford Road with parking on site. Inside it looks like a salon, because it is one — stations, mirrors, shampoo bowls — with instructors moving between chairs. It is a calm room, not a chaotic one.

The consultation

Your student will talk with you before touching your hair or skin: what you want, what you have had done previously, what you dislike about how it currently sits, how much time you spend styling at home. If you have a reference photo, this is the moment for it — photos remove more ambiguity than any description.

An instructor joins this part

A licensed instructor will review the plan before the service begins. Sometimes they will suggest an adjustment — a different placement, a more realistic result for your hair's condition. That conversation happens in front of you, and you are part of it.

During the service

  • Expect pauses. The instructor checks sectioning, application and progress as the work proceeds.
  • Expect quiet concentration. Your student may talk less than a stylist with ten years of chair time. That is focus, not coldness.
  • Expect to be asked how you are doing. Answer honestly.

If something concerns you — the length coming off, the tone developing, the pressure of a facial massage — say it immediately. Nobody in the room wants you to sit politely through something you are unhappy with. Speaking up mid-service is easy; fixing a finished result is harder.

Skin, waxing and nail appointments

For facials and waxing you will be asked about products you use, medications and skin sensitivities. Answer carefully — some ingredients and treatments interact, and the questions exist to protect your skin. For nails, mention any lifting, breakage or previous enhancement removals. The aesthetician's day explains what a skin service actually involves if you would like the detail first.

At the end

The instructor checks the finished work before you leave. You will be shown the result properly — back and sides included — and asked whether you are happy. Say so if you are not; adjustments at that point are normal and expected.

Feedback to the instructor afterwards is genuinely valuable. It is part of how a student is assessed, and a specific comment — “the consultation was excellent”, “the blowout dropped by evening” — is worth more to their training than a general compliment.

Tipping and payment

Ask on the phone when you call, so there are no surprises. Pricing at a student clinic is lower than a commercial salon by design; that is the trade for the extra time.

Coming back

Most people who try it once return, usually for maintenance — trims, blowouts, manicures, regular facials. If you liked working with a particular student, say their name when you call and we will tell you when they are on the floor.

See the full list of service categories on the student salon page, or read what a student salon is and whether you should book one if you are still deciding. When you are ready, call (734) 277-7726 — that is the only step.
